"Hilarious character sketches stuffed to the gills with mad ideas from a truly gifted performer"

Comedy, Acting, Writing
I moved to London in 2014 when I was accepted onto the Writing & Producing Comedy Diploma at the NFTS sponsored by Channel 4. Since then I have written jokes and sketches for BBC Radio 4, BBC Scotland, BBC Radio Scotland, Hat Trick Productions and for Griff Rhys Jones during his 2018 UK Tour.
In 2025 I was commissioned to write and perform three sketches for BBC Scotland's Short Stuff. I have also had sitcoms in development with BBC Scotland and BBC Studios.
As a writer I was shortlisted in 2021 for the Funny Women Comedy Writing Award and Triforce Sitcom Award. I was also longlisted for the BBC Ignite: Children's Animated series and currently head writer on a children's series in development. In 2025 I also joined the Gobby Girls writing team, creating sketches for their sell-out Edinburgh Fringe and Soho Theatre Runs.
I have been a regular on the alternative comedy scene in London and Edinburgh for over a decade. I have run successful cabaret nights and continue to be an active part of the Weirdos Comedy Collective.
In 2023, I was a finalist for the Funny Women Stage Award and the Leicester Square Theatre Sketch-Off Competition with my comedy character, Persephone Gemstone.
While I didn't attend drama school, I have more than made up for it by seeking out the practices I find enlightening and complementary. I have studied in clowning and bouffon with various masters including Philippe Gaulier as well as intensive courses in Shakespeare at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Contemporary Scenestudy at RADA and Trauma Informed Practice with Clowns Without Borders. This, however, is only the tip of the iceberg!
From tap dancing to life drawing, I believe in the continued exploration of a variety of styles, practices and mediums. In 2025 alone, I trained with Told By An Idiot, Complicite, Eric Davis and Write Like a Grrrl.
This year I also reconnected with my background in dance by joining Shapes in Motion. They are a troupe of dancers, physical theatre performers, puppeteers and motion capture creature creators dedicated to collaboration.
Studying an MA in Italian and Modern History at the University of St Andrews, during which I also lived and worked for a year in Venice, has also had a profound impact on my work.
I have written and performed four solo comedy shows that I have taken to the Edinburgh Fringe and other festivals throughout the UK. The first three productions were heavily inspired by my love and knowledge of History:
Dante's History of the Banished (2017)
Character comedy show about exile! Playing figures from history and literature connected to the theme of banishment: Dante, Napoleon, Eve and King Lear.
“Martin is talented in every style she pursues, and like her Italian forebears, is a real Renaissance woman." Broadway Baby ****
Charlie V Martin: The 24/7 Club (2018)
Solo comedy show in which played historical figures with the same birthday as me and explored the repercussions on mental health of being born on the "cusp of oscillation".
“This is one of the most compelling shows you can see this year. It is charming, hilarious and beautiful. An absolute must-see.” Edinburgh Festivals Magazine ****
Charlie Vero-Martin: Scrapbook (2019)
A comedy show about legacy and family history with an exciting all-dancing finale...
“She is fascinated by history and particularly skilled at linking the past to the present and personal. This is a life-affirming show for troubled times.” Dark Chat ****
Charlie Vero-Martin: Picnic (2023)
My 2023 show, Picnic, was a departure from my historically based shows but was a culmination of everything I had explored in previous work: characters, puppetry, audience interaction, impossible tasks, personal stories and surprising twists. A fever dream of characters and a post-pandemic existential crisis, Picnic, drew upon my love of horror as well as comedy.
Directed by Kat Cade, the show enjoyed sold-out performances at the Edinburgh Fringe, Glasgow Comedy Fest, Leicester Comedy Festival, VAULT Fest and at the Soho Theatre.
It was recommended by the British Comedy Guide and was included in The Telegraph's Best Jokes and Comedy Shows of the Fringe 2023. It was also recorded as a special by Next Up Comedy.
"The show is absurd and silly, but it is also carefully crafted, with invisible threads tying things together, which you can’t see until Charlie pings them all towards the end" - One4Review ****

“Charlie’s coaching has been crucial to the growth of my act. She encourages me to get out of my comfort zone, engage with new techniques while developing those familiar to me, and achieve the best possible outcomes of my performance, all within the friendly, non-intimidating environment she creates.
She is engaging, knowledgeable, positive and above all, a great listener. I can’t recommend her enough!”

Improv, Teaching, Directing
I started improv comedy in 2008 when I was accepted into the University of St Andrews improv and sketch group, Blind Mirth. With them I performed weekly (short and long-form) as well as three, sold-out, five-star runs at the Edinburgh Fringe.
When I moved to London in 2014 I joined Glitch - The Improvised Puppet Show, a narrative improv comedy show performed with bunraku puppetry. It was as part of this company that I learned from puppeteers who work with Henson, Disney and the RSC. I performed with them regularly in London and throughout the UK including the Edinburgh Fringe for several years. During this time I was also part of a two-prov, Mike & Charlie, and performed with a variety of groups at Hoopla, the Nursery and the FA.
Since the pandemic I have focussed more on improv coaching and teaching although I still occasionally perform as a guest on line-ups and with an Italian improv group.
I am an independent improv and character comedy teacher and take great pride in devising courses that I believe nurture strong, intuitive improv skills and an authentic stage presence:
-
Improv Rules & How to Break Them: An advanced, experimental, improv course to help performers break out of unhelpful patterns and discover a new level of playfulness on stage
-
Character Comedy Course: A 6-week course where students are guided through the process of writing and performing a character comedy act unique to them in a supportive environment
-
Improv for Confidence, Creativity and Communication: This is a non-performance course I teach as part of my Improv for Business and Wellbeing company, Jollity Coaching.
I have also taught improv at all levels for Hoopla Impro and I am a guest lecturer at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama as part of their Writing for Solo Performance module.
In 2025 I enjoyed consulting and directing on a number of projects, primarily with up-and-coming character comedians.
